CHAPTER SIXTY
"I finished typing the letter to the administrator at the mill."
âGreat, just leave it on my desk. I'll check it later." Parker didn't look up from the file, nodding as he made an occasional mark on the typed pages.
Evie watched him work, searching for something to say in the silence. She simply couldn't arrange her thoughts into the words she needed. Biting her lip, she smiled shyly, self-conscious about her braces. "I want to thank you."
"What?"
"I'm glad you didn't feel my coming back to work so soon after Bri - after Brian died was wrong," she said sheepishly. "It's just that Mom's been such a drag lately. I mean I understand she's depressed, but well, I can't even talk to her. "
Parker lowered the file and smiled. "Some people find solace in work. I know I do. And as far as talking, you can talk to me anytime."
"Really?"
"Of course." He looked out the window, seeing the rain for the first time. "You 'd better be getting home. It's going to pour buckets out there in a minute."
"What about your father's papers? I can't file anything until I know what you want to keep."
It was a task Parker had put off since his father's death. He hadn't felt up to facing the memories and still wasn't ready. "His papers will keep. Right now this work for the union takes precedence."
"You think there will be a strike?"
"I hope not.â
"Iris says that's the only way the company will ever give in."
Parker sighed. "Maybe so, but I'd like to try some good old-fashioned legal arm twisting first. It's a lot less dangerous."
"Dangerous?"
"Strikes sometimes bring out the worst in people."
"You mean people will get hurt? My mother works at the mill."
"I don't think the people of Hartwood would stand for violence,â Parker reassured.
Evie's relief was equivocal. âI sure hope not."
âCome on, stop worrying. And go home! Here," he said pointing to an umbrella in the corner. âTake it. I don't want your mother to blame me if you get pneumonia." He regretted his choice of words, but Evie didn't seem to notice. She took the umbrella, started to leave, then turned.
"The other day, I wanted to say I was sorry," she fumbled.
"Sorry?â
"I shouldn't have let her in."
" Who? "
"The woman doctor."
"Dr. Novak?"
Evie nodded. "She just rushed past me. I'm real sorry."
âDon't give it a second thought. The poor woman has been through her own ordeal."
Evie glared sharply at him. "She killed Brian."
âEvie, nobody's accused her of killing anybody."
"But my mother said so. I thought you were suing her."
"Look, all I've done is send her a letter of intent."
"Doesn't that mean you're going to sue?"
"Not necessarily. A letter of intent is required in California, but I can't file a complaint for malpractice until I get the coroner's final report. For all we know, Dr. Novak may have done everything possible to save Brian."
"Sounds like you're on her side.â
"Itâs not a question of sides, Evie. You wouldn't want me to sue an innocent person, would you?"
Something about the way he answered upset Evie.
